About Our Diabetes Services
At Southern Ocean Medical Center, board-certified physicians in endocrinology and family medicine are committed to helping people with diabetes to manage their disease so that they can enjoy an improved quality of life and avoid the debilitating complications caused by diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic disorder that affects approximately 17 million people in the United States, however one in every three people in the country with diabetes does not know they have the disease. Diabetes prevents the body from manufacturing or properly using insulin, which is necessary for converting food into energy. When the body cannot produce enough insulin, blood sugar levels rise. Elevated blood sugar levels over time can lead to serious complications, such as blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure, circulatory problems and heart disease.
Many studies have shown that good control of blood sugar levels significantly reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications. Our physicians work closely with the Diabetes Self-Management Program at Southern Ocean Medical Center to provide diabetics with education, support, blood sugar monitoring and nutritional counseling. In addition, the Wound Care Center at Southern Ocean Medical Center offers monthly foot screenings for people with diabetes.
