Southern Ocean Medical Center Officially Kicks Off Construction for Multi-Million Dollar Cancer Expansion and Renovation Project

The third of six monumental projects is launched by Meridian Health to enhance oncology care and build hope for residents with new facilities, state-of-the-art technology, and expanded medical expertise.

Manahawkin, NJ - Southern Ocean Medical Center Cancer GroundbreakingSouthern Ocean Medical Center has officially kicked off construction for its new cancer center, an expansion and renovation project that will elevate cancer services to a new level in Ocean County. The new cancer center is slated to open in the spring of 2016.

The project is part of a $128 million investment by Meridian Health, aimed at bringing a higher level of cancer care close to home with enhanced services in Ocean and Monmouth counties. The massive project builds upon well established and trusted cancer services already offered through Meridian Cancer Care. It will provide patients with better access through six expansion projects that will blend clinical expertise with an optimal patient and family experience.

"Residents have come to trust our experienced physicians and compassionate support team, particularly in the area of cancer care," says Joseph Coyle, president of Southern Ocean Medical Center. "Today marks the next step in the evolution of cancer care here in Manahawkin. Beyond the physical transformation that will take place with new treatment areas, clinical space and technology, the way in which we will enhance patient care is perhaps the most exciting part of the project."

Southern Ocean's expansion will feature a 16,545 square foot addition, as well as physical, visual, and technical upgrades, including:

- 20 brand new infusion stations in comfortable healing environment;
- TrueBeam™ linear accelerator, most advanced radiation technology available (December 2016);
- Multi-disciplinary oncology suite for evaluation by a team of cancer physicians in one visit;
- Conference and family supportive care resources;
- Expanded Nurse Navigator services to guide patients through every step; and
- Specialty physician consultation offices.

"Truly amazing things are happening at Meridian, and today's celebration marks a series of milestones that will take place over the next three years," says John K. Lloyd, FACHE, president of Meridian Health. "Meridian is taking things to the next level and building hope with new cancer specialists, even more advanced technology, and a truly multi-disciplinary approach to care."

The first of six cancer projects was introduced in March, when Meridian Cancer Care at Jackson Health Village was opened. Riverview Medical Center broke ground for its cancer project in July, and similar expansions and renovations at Bayshore Community Hospital and Ocean Medical Center will begin shortly. The largest component of the project will take place at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, which will round out Meridian's investment and is planned to be complete in 2017.

"This is an incredible investment in our community, bringing extraordinary oncology care closer to home," says Mark J. Krasna, M.D., Medical Director of Meridian Cancer Care. When you package all these tremendous resources together, patient centered care is what individuals will find at Meridian Cancer Care. It is the cornerstone of our vision and commitment to building hope in New Jersey, and truly sets us apart from others."
