Dedicated Group Celebrates 60 Years of Fundraising for Southern Ocean Medical Center

Manahawkin, NJ - The SOCH Auxiliary, a group dedicated to supporting Southern Ocean Medical Center since their inception in 1955, will celebrate their 60th anniversary at the Auxiliary’s Old and New Shop in Manahawkin on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and invites all members of the community to attend.

The group, which predates the hospital itself, originally formed when a few Stafford Township women saw the need for a local hospital. They began running fundraising events and opened the Old and New Thrift Shop to support the introduction of Southern Ocean Medical Center in 1972. Through the years the results of their fundraising efforts have impacted virtually every expansion project the hospital has seen, including unprecedented fundraising efforts for the recent emergency department expansion. On average, the group raises an impressive $250,000 for the hospital each year.

On May 30, the anniversary celebration will feature special sales at the Old and New Shop, festive décor and giveaways for guests. “Through the hard work and generous efforts of our committed Auxilians and volunteers, their heart felt gifts of time, talent and treasure are helping to heal our community,” stated Southern Ocean Medical Center Foundation executive director, Deborah Allen CFRE. “This milestone event presents the opportunity to shop with meaning and play a part in the community’s growth as the SOCH Auxiliary has for so many years.”

Over the years, the Old and New Shop grew from a garage sale in a member’s Beauty Shop to a $300,000 plus business that relies on countless volunteer hours and dedication. The Shop is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A volunteer staff that currently includes nearly 100 individuals operates the Shop in support of the hospital. In addition to the Old and New Shop, the SOCH Auxiliary hosts regular events such as luncheons, afternoon teas and holiday parties. Proceeds from all events and Shop sales benefit the hospital.

“I enjoy being a part of the SOCH Auxiliary for so many reasons,” shares Auxiliary president, Helen Dondzila. “The longstanding traditions remain because of what they do for the community – support a culture of good health, giving and meaningful friendships.”

Southern Ocean Medical Center is the fortunate beneficiary of four extraordinary Auxiliary chapters (the Boosters, Holly, Laurel, and SOCH). They actively support the hospital through operations of resale shops, the Hospital's Bird Cage Gift Shop, and numerous social and fundraising activities. Collectively, with more than 600 volunteers strong, the Auxiliaries at Southern Ocean Medical Center support the hospital every day in many different ways.
