Advanced Technology Now Identifies Breast Density, Aiding in the Fight Against Cancer

Southern Ocean Medical Center offers progressive imaging technology, paired with 3D breast scan, for optimal screening for breast cancer

Manahawkin, NJ - Radiologists at Southern Ocean Medical Center are now armed with advanced computer technology to aid in the detection of breast cancers during routine mammography. In particular, women with dense breast tissue are benefiting from computer-aided detection (CAD) now offered at the medical center. Early detection is a critical component in the fight against breast cancer and optimal outcomes.

Breast tissue density refers to the way that a woman's breast appears on a mammogram. Breast tissue is either fat or fibroglandular (fibrous tissue and the glands that produce milk during a woman's child-bearing years) Fatty tissue is transparent to X-rays and appears near black on a mammogram. Dense tissue stops x-rays and appears white on the mammogram. Unfortunately, cancers are also white on mammography, and dense breast tissue can impact the ability to find small cancers.

CAD technology is designed to help radiologists identify potential cancers. During all routine mammograms, sophisticated software is used to search the mammogram and mark suspicious areas in the image, indicating to the radiologist to take a closer look at particular regions. With this additional information, the radiologist can then decide if the area(s) warrant further evaluation. Depending on the density rating that is provided by the CAD, the radiologist can determine if an automated breast volume scan (ABVS) may be beneficial. This 3D total breast scan can be done right away if necessary.

"The CAD technology is a powerful tool to detect breast cancer earlier in women with dense breast tissue, which is critical to help save more lives," says Alicia Daniels, M.D., a radiologist at Southern Ocean Medical Center. "Patients can be confident that we are using advanced technology to provide the highest quality of care."

Studies have shown that mammography is the best way to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage and can help identify tumors that are too small to feel during an exam. For more information on the woman's imaging services available at Southern Ocean Medical Center or to make an appointment for a mammography, call 609-978-8900 extension 4232. CAD and ABVS technology is also available at Health Village Imaging, which is affiliated with Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin.
