Southern Ocean Hospital Auxiliaries Boost Gift to $3 Million

Manahawkin, NJ - For more than four decades the residents served by Southern Ocean Medical Center have been the fortunate beneficiaries of the work of hundreds of dedicated community supporters.  Specifically, the four Auxiliary chapters:  the Boosters, Holly, Laurel, and SOCH represent the long standing commitment of individuals, whose tireless efforts predate the Hospital itself.  Through the years the results of their fundraising efforts have impacted virtually every expansion project since the Hospital’s inception.

The newest project worthy of the Auxiliaries’ collective support is the much needed expansion of the Emergency Department.  The campaign to expand the ED has been titled “Charting a New Course – Setting Sail for Excellence in Emergency Care” and the project will dramatically enhance the way emergency care is delivered by more than tripling the department’s footprint.

The Auxiliary Coordinating Council representing all four auxiliaries recently celebrated the completion of a $2,000,000 pledge for the current Emergency Department expansion, and further committed an unprecedented additional $1,000,000 for the project in 2013.

“The new Emergency Department will be the largest building project in the history of the Medical Center, and when the doors open later this year, emergency care for the community will be raised to a new level,” says Joe Coyle, president of Southern Ocean Medical Center. “The work and commitment of our auxilians is inspiring and we are so grateful for their generous support in this endeavor which is the largest building project in our history.”

The four Auxiliary chapters operate three thrift shops – on Bay Avenue in Manahawkin, on Main Street in Tuckerton, and in the Waretown Plaza on Route 9, as well as the Bird Cage gift shop, just off the Hospital’s main lobby.  The respective Holly, Laurel and SOCH Auxiliary thrift shops are each a treasure trove of bargains and unique items, including antiques, household items, books and clothing. The Boosters Auxiliary operates “The Bird Cage Gift Shop” in the Hospital with convenient and inspirational gifts for hospital patients and visitors.

“Through the hard work and generous efforts our committed Auxilians and volunteers, their heart felt gifts of time, talent, and treasure are helping to heal our community,” stated SOMC Foundation Executive Director, Deborah Allen.  “The funds generated through the various thrift shops and the The Bird Cage, are then allocated to Hospital projects based on the area of greatest need.”

These facilities are not just a way to generate revenue for SOMC’s services, but they are a community benefit in their own right.  Through a partnership with the Interfaith Council, those less fortunate in the community (based on a determination of need) may receive a voucher to use in any of the Auxiliary managed Thrift Shops for clothing items.

Auxilians also participate in other fundraising and social activities, including teas, fashion shows, and regular meetings.  Many volunteer their time in the Hospital, assisting patients, families, visitors, and staff.  The Auxiliaries welcome new membership.
